Why should I have pre-anesthetic blood work done?

Staff in surgical gowns monitor a patient at an anesthesia table

We use the safest anesthetics available for your pet. However, we cannot eliminate all risks of anesthesia. Knowing that your pet has normal organ function is critical for safe anesthesia and in determining which anesthetic drugs your pet will receive. If abnormalities are found, additional tests may be needed or different drugs may be used to ensure that we minimize the risks of anesthesia in your pet.

Important organs for anesthesia include the liver, kidneys, heart, and lungs. Our tests can also make sure your pet has enough red blood cells and can clot properly before a surgery. Undetected health problems can lead to difficulties during anesthesia (such as decreased blood pressure, increased bleeding, decreased heart rate) during recovery from the anesthesia, and the weeks following the anesthesia.

Our goal is to provide the safest anesthesia possible for your pet, giving you peace of mind
