How long should I leave my pet out in the cold weather?

This depends on many factors, including what size your dog is, how cold it is, whether your dog has any shelter, and if they are active while outside.  The fur, especially the undercoat, also makes a big difference.

Just like us, a dog that is running around playing can stay outside longer without getting cold.  Smaller dogs cannot stay outside as long as bigger-sized dogs.  In addition, the colder it gets, the less time they should spend outside.  Use special caution when temperatures reach below 20 degrees Fahrenheit and during cold winter nights.  If your pet does not seem comfortable while outside or his/her feet seem sensitive, it may be too cold for them.
